Competition and Technical Progress in Marx: Two Different Perspectives Maria Daniela Giammanco University of Catania (ITALY)-Facoltà di Scienze Politiche Dipartimento di Analisi dei Processi Politici, Sociali e Istituzionali Starting from Marx's twofold idea of competition, this work focuses on the two different but consistently interrelated ways in which it is possible to envisage technical progress in Marx's work. During the emergence of capitalism, competition is a negative force, leading to the destruction of pre-capitalistic modes of production, therefore technical progress can be seen as supporting capital in establishing complete command over labour. In a fully developed capitalistic society, competition is a process allowing the development and reproduction of the capitalistic mode of production, and technical progress is a powerful instrument in the struggle among capitals.
